Equine Massage & Bodywork

Equine Massage Therapy & Bodywork

A unique, tailored treatment plan for each unique horse. We start with movement and stance analysis, range of motion testing, followed by palpation and individualized treatments. We discuss your horse’s current status and evaluate future goals you have. Every treatment thereafter is focused to help you achieve your goals.

Massage is well known to improve circulation, decrease inflammation, improve healing time, restore mobility, and encourage a sense of general well-being in horses. You will see a happier horse, and experience a more symmetrical, fluid ride.

We utilize a combination of science-backed therapeutic modalities (Sportsmassage, Myofascial Release, Neurofascial Conditioning (TM), Rib Entrapment Therapy(TM), ElectroStim, Kinesiotaping, and PEMF) to achieve the best results possible. Most people are familiar with sportsmassage, Swedish massage, and myofascial release modalities. Some information regarding additional modalities:

  • Kinesiotaping and ElectroStim are modalities often seen in the human physical therapy world. For horses, kinesiotape can be utilized to help activate or relax muscles or fascia, support joints or soft tissue, decompress areas of inflammation to improve circulation and healing time.

  • ElectroStim can be used along fascial lines or on specific accupressure points to open up pathways between the points. This is effective if the horse has a specific area or fascial line that is “blocked” and other techniques are not effective. Most horses are unbothered by it, or even enjoy it.

  • Neurofascial Conditioning (TM) (NFC) is a technique that utilizes an IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) tool to communicate with the nervous system via nerve fibers (C-nerve fibers, Paccini, Ruffini) that an area being worked on is no longer in pain. It mitigates pain to break through the pain-spasm-pain cycle, so myofascial release can be performed effectively. This technique is the precursor to Rib Entrapment Therapy (TM).

  • Rib Entrapment Therapy (TM) is a revolutionary technique that utilizes NFC and soft tissue joint mobilizations to balance the ribs and the body. It is based on the theory that when the ribcage (including the sternum) is rotated out of balance, the effects are not isolated to the ribs, but rather, the entire body is affected. If the ribcage can be balanced, the rest of the body can then be balanced and remain so. See before and after photos below!

We aim to restore balance and mobility as much as possible, so the horse may function at its best.

It goes without saying, the horse can only remain as balanced as its rider. Therefore, it is imperative for the rider to also seek bodywork/PT/functional movement therapy as well as proper instruction from a knowledgeable trainer in order for the rider to gain as much balance as possible, and then horse and rider may perform as a balanced pair.

Before and Aftter Photos

This horse has a significant rotation of the ribcage and imbalanced in his shoulders. (Lusitano gelding, age ~17)

He has been sound ever since and has been able to return to eventing.

Top photo is before treatment, Bottom photo is after treatment. He achieved a greater sense of balance, and we restored functional movement. His walk pre-treatment was stiff and stilted, his hips not moving fluidly; after treatment, his walk was forward and swinging.

This Mustang gelding initially presented with on and off lameness issues. After 3 sessions, he straightened his spine and his hips.

Tayo (10 year old SW gelding) has had twisted front legs his entire life, so far as we know.

After 3 sessions, his legs improved this much. With continued treatment, he has been able to maintain the straightness seen in this “after” photo. We are actively continuing to work on more soft tissue structures (including limb flexor and extensors and muscular attachments to sternum and medial humeri) to help release as much twist as possible and balance his body.
